In the near future imagined by .hack//, The World is the most popular MMORPG on the planet. When players start falling into unexplained comas after being "killed" in-game by a mysterious character named Skeith, young player Kite must investigate inside the game itself to uncover the mystery and save his friend Orca, trapped in an endless coma.

Designed by CyberConnect2, .hack// is an ambitious multimedia project blending video games, anime (.hack//SIGN, Liminality, Roots, G.U.), manga and music composed by Yuki Kajiura, all connected by a shared mythology around The World. A forerunner in its exploration of virtual worlds, gaming addiction and emerging artificial intelligence, .hack// anticipated themes that have since become central to contemporary fiction.
