About the work

In 2015, Tokyo-3 is regularly attacked by mysterious entities called Angels. Fourteen-year-old Shinji Ikari is reluctantly recruited by NERV — led by his distant father — to pilot the biomechanical giant robot Evangelion Unit-01. Alongside Rei Ayanami and Asuka Langley, he must face not only overwhelming enemies but also his own trauma and fear of abandonment.

Created by Hideaki Anno, Neon Genesis Evangelion upended the conventions of the mecha genre in 1995 by placing psychological introspection and existential dread at the heart of the story rather than mere robot action. Its controversial original ending, reworked in The End of Evangelion and later fully reimagined in the Rebuild tetralogy, made the franchise one of the most studied and debated in the history of Japanese animation.
