Final Fantasy is not a saga in the classic sense but an anthology of independent worlds: each main installment offers a new setting, new characters and often a new combat system, while retaining recurring elements like summons, chocobos or the crystals that govern magic.
Created by Hironobu Sakaguchi and developed by Square (now Square Enix), the franchise has stood since 1987 as one of the most influential in Japanese RPGs, from Final Fantasy VII's massive cultural impact to Final Fantasy X's cinematic storytelling, or Final Fantasy XIV, now a major MMORPG. Each installment continues to push the genre's technical and narrative boundaries.
